It looks like Bollywood has entered an era of sports biopics, and the best part is that people like them. First Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and now Mary Kom have proved to the film-makers that if made well and with creativity, the biopics can be made into successful movies and they necessarily not be limited to being documentaries.
Following the suite, Neeraj Pandey has launched a movie on the current captain of the Indian cricket team – MS Dhoni – obviously expecting and hoping that the audience will like it and love it. But will that actually work? The first question that came to my mind was – Why Dhoni? Yes, he might have been the most successful captain of Indian cricket team, but Ganguly’s role was no less in transforming Indian side from a defensive side to an attacking team. And what about the ‘God’ of Indian cricket – Sachin Tendulkar? If you mean to say that Dhoni deserves to have a biopic more than Tendulkar, you must be joking. For that matter, I’d rank Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Rahul Dravid above Dhoni for their fan following, inspirational personality and impeccable character.
I guess, I’m just thinking a little too much here. A country that helps movies like Kick and Chennai Express to earn more than Rs 400 crores, how many people will actually be thinking of this movie as inspirational, motivational and ‘Biopic’. Let’s see what happens.
